Banquet Planning

Before being able to start any type of banquet planning, you need to be certain what the theme and/or goals are.  Whether this event is for you personally or if it is for someone else, the first thing you need to do is make lists.  Whether you have done event planning before or not, you are not alone.  You have most certainly attended functions in the past, therefore you know that there are many facets to an event attended by many guests.

If you are planning a yearly event, the previous people who put the event on are a great source of information to help with the planning of the current event.  Not all people want to take the responsibility of overseeing the entire banquet planning, but they are more than happy to help out in their area of expertise.  That said, find out who has helped in the past and go from there.  Your best help is someone who has been in your shoes.  That way, you won’t have to figure it out all by yourself.

The success of an event lies on all aspects – from the table placements and settings to the type of chairs being used, the set-up of the room as far as placement of a podium and microphone to the entertainment, if there will be some.  Banquet planning is not for the weak of heart, you must have all your ducks in a row and make sure you continue to rely on the lists you started with at the beginning of the planning stage.  Make sure that every item, no matter how insignificant it seems, has been scratched off as it has been done.  You don’t want to have to waste any of the precious time you have by redoing anything.

Banquet planning can be frightening at the beginning, because there are so many things that come into play.  But, keep in mind that your resources are your best allies.  You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.  There have been hundreds of people before you who have been successful at planning an event and they are there for you to tap into.   The most important part of banquet planning is to make sure you have everything written down, all your questions, your important details and what is expected from the event.  By following these basic rules, your chances of success are much more likely.
